This weeks Words of Prayer, Words of Kindness is prepared in the merit of
a special donor or sponsor of ours, that her daughter Rachel Leah receive a healing on all levels and come to the Torah path that is appropriate for her
Shmiras HaLashon Thought
It is a common mistake that saying something that is true about another is not considered Lashon Hara, even if it is harmful. This is a grave error, for that is the definition of Lashon Hara. If a person tells lies about another or alters the truth or says something false about another, this is considered Motzi Shem Ra, defaming or slandering him / her. (The first paragraph of Chafetz Chaim)
Bitachon Thought
Today is the fast of the 10th of Tevet which is the start of the destruction of the Temple. The Temple was destroyed due to baseless hatred which is most clearly seen in Lashon Hara, when people talk badly of each other or use words in a way that cause the other pain or suffering in a physical, emotional, financial or spiritual manner.
For those who are fasting and complete the full morning prayers including Slichos, there is a paragraph that is repeated many times in the Slichos section of the prayers and this reads in English as follows: "My ancestors, when they put their trust in the Name of the G-d of my Strength, they became great, successful and bore fruit; but from the time they strayed from Him and acted perversely, they progressively declined until the tenth month." (The tenth month is the month of Tevet and the beginning of the destruction of our Holy Temple). (Translation as provided in the Tehillat Hashem Siddur)
Since we move directly from the fast to Kiddush for Shabbos, (the fast ends after candle lighting and is broken after Maariv prayers, which means we move directly from the fast to Kiddush of Shabbos night) I decided to put just these few thoughts to give us something to think about as we prepare for Shabbos and on Shabbos.
Tehillim Thought
This week, I wish to share a few responses coming in after the last email sent out. For those who have not yet read the email, it contained certain questions related to how we read the Tehillim, ie in Hebrew or English and what kind of Sefer Tehillim would assist us to read it more effectively. Also a question as to how everyone is managing during the shorter winter months for those in the Northern Hemisphere.
We are receiving some positive feedback as to the extent to which women make sure to complete their Tehillim on Shabbos. One woman makes sure to do her Tehillim immediately she comes home from Shul after Morning Davening, letting her children play for a little before they progress to the next part of the Shabbos day. Another reads her Tehillim just after lunch, pushing off her Shabbos sleep if she needs to. Another will delay taking out Shabbat in order to make sure she has completed all her Tehillim and anything else special to Shabbos.
One lady described how she participates in Tehillim Mechulak at Shul after the morning prayers together with other women, then returns home and makes time to do the Tehillim for this group. While another woman completes the whole Sefer Tehillim every Shabbos.
It is wonderful to read how special Tehillim is to these women. Let it give Chizuk to those who find it difficult to find the time to recite their chosen Tehillim.
Once again we are reminded that our Sages teach, if we only knew the power of Tehillim, we would spend all our time reciting Tehillim.
To leave you with a sobering thought, one of the women mentioned that when we find ourselves on a bus, standing waiting in a queue (online for Americans), waiting for a doctor or in any office, we have a few choices to pass the time. We can reach for a cell phone and find all manner of things to talk about (much of which is Lashon Hara), we can reach for a magazine and read all manner of articles, in secular magazines mostly gossip and problematic speech. Or we can reach for our Sefer Tehillim. Any Tehillim are good from 1 – 150. In years gone by, this is the first choice our mothers had. Let us return to the ways of our ancestors, putting our faith in Hashem and using our precious time for words of prayer, kindness and Tehillim. May we too merit as our ancestors did to become great, successful and bear fruit, and may we merit our Holy Temple in her place with the Final Geulah.
The list for this week can be found on http://lovingkindness.co/tehillim.html
