I recently posted about how to lace up your bridal gown with corset and laces. In today's blog post I would like to touch on another common problem that I find from Kallot who come to our Bridal Gown Gemach. So far, only one Kallah had a vague idea of what kind of bridal gown she was looking for. Most come without any idea.
If you have not yet discovered your natural body type or shape, spend a little time getting to know it. Do you have small shoulders and broad hips? Are you petite or heavy set? Do you have any aspects of your figure that you would like to disguise or hide? Do you tend to prefer a certain style of neckline? Can you handle shoulder pads? Do you prefer a full skirt, a long skirt, a train? Are you tall or short? Do you have any idea what kind of shoes you would like to wear? The better you know yourself, what kind of clothing is flattering for you and what kind of image you are looking for, the easier it will be to shop for that perfect bridal gown for you.
Get to know types of fabric. Satin, silk, tulle, polyester, lace are all quite different and these are just 5 types of fabric. The type of fabric that your bridal gown is made of will have an impact on how warm it is or cool, how the fabric falls, how easily it might crease, whether or not the fabric is see-through. How heavy the bridal gown is will also be determined to an extent by both style of gown and type of fabric.
Fabrics made of natural fibers tend to breathe better. That is the positive side, the down side is they are the more expensive fabrics and also might crease more easily. These details will all effect both style of bridal gown and the cost involved in renting or having one made that will help you to feel like the queen that you are on your special day.
Another area to research in advance is do you like beading, lace, simple, classic style, many layers, few layers. Spend a little time looking at some bridal magazines and images online. In today's time you can even have a look at wedding videos that go up online. The more you are prepared and have in mind what kind of look or style will suit you and your figure and also what will suit your venue the easier it will be for you to find the bridal gown that is just right for you.
Keep in mind also the time of year that your wedding will take place. If your wedding will be in winter, then you are more likely to want the thicker materials and possibly more layers as they will help to keep you warm. It is also important to find out the extent to which the wedding hall or venue will be heated. If you are having an indoor wedding with air conditioner or heating, make sure you find out details of possible temperature and ventilation. The last thing you want is the bride to overheat or become dizzy if the venue does not have enough ventilation and the focus is on heating while you are having a good time dancing. If you have ordered a dress with many layers and think material that does not breathe too well, lack of ventilation can be a problem for some.
If on the other hand you will be getting married in summer, you are likely to want to thinner fabric. Of course, that does not have to mean see-through. It is possible to find modest gowns that are not too much of a strain on your system in terms of being thick and heavy. Once again you will want to know if the venue will be well ventilated.
These are just some ideas that will help you in making your trip to a bridal gown Gemach or store more efficient and successful.
